Therapy Dogs

Clients are always asking about the dogs. I used to be convinced they received more referrals than I did. They say once you have a Cavalier (King Charles Spaniel) you collect them. Actually many dogs, and cats, and birds and bunnies can be used as therapeutic animals in hospitals, senior centers and after a crises.

Since I have dogs – Winston, Allie, and Kissy- I have information on therapy dogs.

To become a therapy dog, the dog and it’s owner must pass the Canine Good Citizen Test and then pass an additional evaluation through one of the therapy dog organizations, such as Therapy Dogs, International, or Delta Society. I believe children over a certain age are able to participate with their parent and pet in some agencies.

The following links provide further information:

1. Therapy Dogs, International Volunteer organization for therapy dog evaluation and sending out volunteers and their owners.

2. Delta Society
Organization that trains volunteers to perform animal assisted therapy and animal assisted activities with those who would benefit from interaction with a pet. Also works to help train and give companion dogs to those who need them. Dogs and other animals are able volunteer through Delta.

3. Winston’s cousin in the news Lois Abrams is a psychologist and has Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and- surprise-they are therapy dogs. Read about one of them here, he is a real hero (in the family too)

4. Here are some books on therapy dogs, animal-assisted therapy, and training your furry/feathered friend to become a therapy pet.
